Woolworths is Australia's biggest supermarket chain, and now the #1 retail group overall, having overtaken Coles in 2006. The two companies compete fiercely in several sectors. Woolworths has the dominant position in the local grocery market, as well as interests in consumer electronics and general merchandise through other brands including Dick Smith Electronics, Tandy and Big W general discount stores. Despite its name, Woolworths has no connection to either the British or American retail operations of the same name.
