InBev (Belgium)

A series
of aggressive acquisitions in a rapidly consolidating market has made InBev,
formerly known as Interbrew, the world's leading brewer by volume. Until now,
the group has only had a limited
presence in the US, the world's biggest beer market, but a far more
extensive global profile than its main rivals
Anheuser-Busch and SABMiller. The key to Interbrew's
growth has been a series of major acquisitions, including two of the UK's biggest beer marketers, and several important German
brands. Added to the group's existing European flagship Stella
Artois, and a strong portfolio of regional beers,
these gave Interbrew the right to describe itself as the "world's
local brewer" by 2003, with a leading position in virtually every country in
which it had a presence. The crowning deal - so far at least - was a merger in 2004 with South American
brewer AmBev to form a new global
giant. Yet that arrangement was completely overshadowed in 2008 when InBev
sealed a deal to acquire American giant Anheuser-Busch for a whopping $52bn. Click
