Wrong, Never In Doubt by Donny Deutsch (with Peter Knobler) (Harper
Collins) UK & European users The Donny Deutsch media juggernaut rolls on. Ad man. Chat show guest. Then chat show host and all-round TV personality. Now, inspirational business guru. Donny Deutsch's first book aims to encapsulate the business philosophy that got him where he is today (see Adbrands' Deutsch agency profile), and to encourage others to emulate his success by "unleashing the business rebel within". To be honest, little of what Deutsch has to impart is likely to work for anyone other than those who already share his brash and ballsy no-excuses approach to life (and possibly his street-wise New York Jewish upbringing as well). But it certainly makes for entertaining reading. Deutsch gives fair credit to the team at the agency which still bears his name, but this is really a book about me, me, me. There's no rocket science here. The underlying key to Deutsch's advice to would-be tycoons is to start by ditching self-doubt. Don't envy the other guy, simply ask yourself, "why not me?", and then just "Do!". Also, put yourself in your client's shoes, delegate responsibility, fire the weakest links in your company because it will also motivate the others. Oh, and look good, work out and don't carry a briefcase. "Winning is the only thing. Failure is not an option." That's all par for the course. Much more interesting are Deutsch's take on the advertising industry as a whole and what he calls its corporate inferiority complex, as well as the numerous but often too fleeting reflections on specific individual clients. Also the occasional insight into Deutsch's own story. His side of that Ad Age quote, for example (when he told a reporter, "I have the best body of any advertising CEO in the world"). Or how he feels about the way he's generally perceived ("I'd be more concerned if the people who did know me thought I was a schmuck."). All in all it's a fascinating insight into the workings of the man who is almost certainly the most widely-known famous figure adland has produced since the heyday of Maurice & Charles Saatchi.
