Siemens (Germany)

Siemens is among the world's largest electronics and engineering companies. Its operations span almost every sort of high-tech electrical engineering endeavour from traffic light systems to nuclear generators, and from RFID tracking chips to motors. Siemens boasts more than 50,000 product lines, comprising over a million separate products. However, several subsidiaries have struggled with underperformance in recent years and have been divested, while others have been bolstered through a series of acquisitions. Voice and data products and networks were once the group's biggest business but this unit was badly dented by the downturn in the worldwide market after 2000. In 2005, Siemens called it a day in mobile handsets, selling that business to Taiwanese manufacturer BenQ. A year later it agreed to merge its telecoms network infrastructure unit with that of Nokia. Other such joint ventures include leading domestic appliances manufacturer BSH Bosch und Siemens and European computer manufacturer Fujitsu-Siemens. The group's financial performance has been overshadowed since 2006 by two corporate corruption scandals which claimed the jobs of several senior managers.
