Carrefour
is the second largest retail group worldwide, behind
America's Wal-Mart, and the
market leader in Europe. By mid 2007
the group and its franchise partners managed a combined network of almost
15,000 stores in 29 countries. Although it has no presence in the US, UK and
Germany, Carrefour has significant interests throughout the rest of Europe, but has
gradually cut back its presence in some Asian and Latin American markets.
For several years, the group has been struggling to reignite growth in its
biggest territory, France, which still accounts for just under half of all
revenues. There were signs that Carrefour might finally have begun to
resolve that problem in 2006. Advertising Age estimated global measured
advertising expenditure of $318m in 2006, making Carrefour the world's #87
