Sony Ericsson was formed in 2002 from the merger of what were then the struggling handset subsidiaries of Sony and Ericsson. The merger was conceived in order to combine Ericsson's technical excellence with Sony's expertise in consumer electronics. After a slow start the business established itself as one of the leaders in its market by 2006, although performance began to slow dramatically in 2007 and 2008.
